The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad published its 1886 accounts showing total earnings of 6 738 077 47, up 619 023 75 from 1885, total expenses 4 927 416 68 up 292 243 22, net earnings 2 510 660 79 up 326 880 53, with the line reorganized and taken from receivers on July 5, and all interest coupons since that date paid.
Byron L. Smith of Chicago is named commissioner to examine a portion of the Northern Pacific Railroad in place of J. W. Doan, who declined the post.
Justice Wood of the U. S. Supreme Court died yesterday just after noon. The report confirms the long serving jurist passed away at an early hour, ending a career marked by landmark rulings and public service.
Senator McPherson of New Jersey says New Jersey will send a solid delegation to support Cleveland and he expects no opposition to his renomination. He cites Cleveland's immense popularity with the people and notes New York's labor vote creates uncertainty if an independent candidate is nominated. He adds that the Democratic party should renominate Clare for strong voters.
Yesterday morning a public reception honored Jefferson Davis with two hours of handshakes and a notable crowd, followed by a banquet where Davis praised Southern rights and urged unity. He recalled Civil War battles and pledged that the Army of the South would shine in memory, of his wife and daughter present.
Tacoma May 12 Hansen Co's mill on the coast produced 416,834 feet of lumber in ten hours surpassing Port Blakely's 303,000 feet and beating the world record for soft pine. Chippewa Falls previously held 537,000 feet in twelve hours with soft pine. Tacoma's run used tough grained fir and featured three brooms on the front of the mill signaling a clean sweep.
The World's Washington special reports ex-Speaker Keifer stating Ohio intelligent voters favor Sherman for president and renomination of Foraker for governor. Democrats have little chance to win the governorship, and Sherman or Blaine could carry Ohio. Keifer doubts Foraker in the presidential convention and notes Cleveland is unpopular with Democrats, though he could gain strength enough to secure a nomination if the party allows it.
New York on May 11 reports the clipper Seminole capt Hatch and the Charmer capt Holmes left their piers on an 8,000 mile voyage around Cape Horn to San Francisco. Seminole led the departure, towed from the river before noon, Charmer followed mid afternoon, while South authority figures lean toward Seminole as the likely winner and chartered companies deny pledges of the race.
In San Francisco at Channel and Pourth streets a grain warehouse collapsed this afternoon sending timber crashing. Twelve year old August Bagan, son of the night watchman, died instantly, while three laborers were seriously injured. The building held 3000 tons of grain and belonged to the Southern Pacific Company.

The clipper ships Charmer and Seminole will start a 27 day ocean race from New York to this port. Charmer, owned by John Rosenfeldt through Charner line, is a Cali fornia Fast Freight vessel. Seminole, owned by Lawrence Giles & Co, has long sailed the California trade under Captain Holmes. The Seminole’s mate Hatch becomes captain, opposing Holmes aboard the Charmer. Local agents are Williams Dimond & Co for Charmer and Sutton Beebe & Co for Seminole. Previous best New York to port runs by Andrew Jackson and Flying Cloud reached eighty nine days. Both ships cleared New York yesterday with general merchandise.
