Four armed men attempted to rob Medicine Valley Bank in Medicine Lodge Kansas last Wednesday. The bank's president and cashier were killed. Robbers fled but were soon captured and jailed. A vigilante crowd later shot one robber and hanged the other three near town. Two apparent ringleaders, Henry Brown and James Wheeler, were local marshals.
James R. Keene rose from a Pine Street curbstone broker to millionaire status through bold, reckless speculation earning national fame. He left the coast with five million dollars and was hailed in New York as a top California speculator, riding prosperity before a dramatic failure.
The author warns that a Democratic ring directed the Election Commissioner to fraudulently inflate votes to boost public debt interest. The Senate Committee adopted a resolution allowing the Interior Secretary to move Chief Joseph’s Nez Perce band to their ancestral Idaho reservation. Joseph’s group, now in Indian Territory, suffers from harsh climate. A House amendment making Indians subject to criminal laws was entirely struck out.

In Sacramento 1882 Mrs. J L Connor contracted to marry William Jarvis who would assign 10 000 in bonds of the National Water and Mining Co upon marriage. He died before consummation. Connor sued his administrators for the bonds but failed in Superior Court. She appealed to the Supreme Court which granted a new trial. Also notes on Kentucky blue grass being green, not blue, and its growth on blue limestone soil with year round verdure.
An Oakland Convention saw explosive anti Blaine propaganda claiming his Catholic lineage would doom his nomination. The author argues religion should not determine presidential qualifications and warns against sectarian conflict devaluing politics.
