Graves of Federals and Confederates decorated alike to show the Union remains intact. While heavy rains affected many areas, Reno Nevada enjoyed ideal weather and a record procession. The holiday grows in popularity and the grave decoration tradition endures.
Washington reports a rich Republican senator has given agents $50,000 to bet in $1,000 increments that Harrison will not be nominated. He offers, if Harrison is nominated, to stake unlimited sums at 2 to 1 against Harrison's election.
May 28. Earthquake shocks were felt here between 2 and 3 o'clock this morning. The fret was quite, sheaty and lasted a minute or more.
At 7 40 last night a violent tornado hit Harper Kansas causing extensive destruction. Most businesses were leveled or heavily damaged. Depots at Santa Fe and Atchison and Southern destroyed. Schools, church, Patterson's Hotel, Opera House, and mill ruined. Seven deaths reported with many injured. Communication cut, wires down up to twelve miles. Also seven dead at Argonica. Nearby Rago saw a damaging water spout with no reported fatalities. Crystal Springs devastated earlier. overall losses around 500000 with minimal cyclone insurance.
Ponziano Oregon May 28 The Week and Briggs case ends with an assembly vote of 429 to 87. Appeals against New York Presbytery action are sustained. Papers return to Presbytery to proceed with trial, which is ordered to be discontinued. A deferred final action may occur Monday. The Greenwood murder trial in Nara California ends with Carl Schmidt found guilty of first degree murder, life imprisonment.
Lonpox May 30 crowds fill the club house as Jackson defeats Slavin by knockout in the tenth round of a heavyweight bout. Jackson, weighing 193 pounds, bested Slavin 185 with a series of blows after a tight ten rounds, amid cheers and betting activity.
Drowned. Two daughters of J M Phillips near Boxershxtp Cal are missing since yesterday morning. River flooding hampers search as brush and willows complicate tracking. Also reported are the Kern river deaths of Charles E Jewett and two youths during a picnic outing at the Rapid. Jewett plunged after a fall, losing his life amid heavy breakers. The Apache Kid, Puerix Ariz, May 28, allegedly killed a squaw on the Black River and abducted a girl who was later returned. He vows to surrender in two years. In Mendocino, deputies arrest Carter and Haney for the Caddero stage robbery on May 17. In Washington the government notes France and Germany will send delegates to the International Monetary Conference. In California results show San Francisco 3 Los Angeles 4, San Jose 5 Oakland 0.
