In Sacramento and Yolo counties a corpse found in the Sacramento River led to a cross river inquest. Supervisor Snider of Washington county reports the event while J G Bright Justice of the Peace planned the inquest on the Yolo side. Coroner Clark from Sacramento conducted the inquiry, using a dead wagon to reach the city and claim fees. The episode is viewed as a prank on Bright by the Sacramento coroner.
New York reports the Indicator says control of the Northern Pacific by Union Pacific is increasingly likely after stock purchases over two months. Directors’ meeting praised the line’s surplus over 1 million, new twenty year scrip in $500 and $1,000 denominations, and branch-line traffic pacts. Also notes a $250 missing coin error in Mr. Jordan’s accounts, quickly corrected, and highlights Minneapolis growth with major public works and population surge.
Two steamers Monmouthshire and Glenshiel race from Yokohama via Suez to New York with large tea cargoes. Monmouthshire left May 31 with 6,000,000 pounds of Japan tea. Henry Mc Nulty county treasurer died this morning from gastritis in Nevada City. A Minnesota native born 64 years ago he came to California in 1849 with Governor Bartlett and helped build ditches for Eureka Lake Co. He later endured failed ventures and mining injuries that ended his ability to work after last fall’s political campaign. He will be buried at North Bloomfield under Magans’ auspices.
The Santa Cruz Improvement Society has organized under a charter to promote public health by better hygienic conditions, improve streets, public grounds, sidewalks, plant trees, lay out walks, remove nuisances, and beautify the town to increase residence value and appeal. The society reports strong citizen support and expects growth beyond initial aims.

Curco July 23 Ed Martin a young miner near Lovelock's mine was preparing a blast when a plant powder cartridge exploded in his hand tearing off two middle fingers and mangling the palm. Medical aid was summoned and doctors hope the hand can be saved though it is uncertain.
Tucson reports great unrest over blackmail suits tied to a ring of Territorial officials including the Attorney General and Immigration Commissioner. Citizens demand Governor Zulick remove three appointees as pressure grows from merchants, papers, and Democratic leaders.
In Philipsburg Montana a mob of about thirty men seized F L Currie, superintendent of the San Francisco mine, and Louis Demers and Sam Toleman, forcing them to leave town with a rope around their necks. Heedless of the warning, Demers and Toleman returned and pressed warrants against the attackers. The case has split the town, with Sheriff Coleman present to prevent further trouble.
Herman Kurth and Co of Morosini New York have bought 60 acres of land adjoining Stockton for 18000. They will construct a 100000 lager beer brewery using a new vacuum process. Stockton was chosen for transportation costs and access to barley centers. Preliminary work has begun.
