Bi metalism or Monometallist Clash in 1898 Campaign
In a Washington interview Senator Stewart discusses the Populist conference in St. Louis. He says the next presidential campaign will hinge on bi metallo ism or monometallism and that old parties must act to square their platforms. Populists vow free coinage of gold and silver at 16 to 1, aiming to mobilize support against the single gold standard and for full coinage. The piece argues Western and Southern voters resent campaign promises and shifting party stances and that 1898 will test commitments to bimetallism.
