The Carson Tribune lauds Nevada for electing a Republican chief executive and a largely Republican official corps. It praises outgoing officers C. G. Preble and Professor Young for their service, urges unity to further state development, mine growth, irrigation, and immigrant influx for future prosperity.
News from San Francisco notes no open rate cut yet but mentions reduced Eastern passenger rates with fares to New York around 61 dollars and a 650 dollar offer by Canadian Pacific. The New York Sun discusses James Donald Cameron as a rising Republican presidential candidate in 1888, highlighting his loyalty and influence. State bonds purchases and Logan fund steps are described, along with missing Major Robert Beck, and J W Maddrill’s move to Los Angeles Tribune. December mint coinage totals are given, and California Legislature begins without organizing, delaying Senate ballots to January 13.
The Esmeralda News endorses candidates for Nevada’s U S Senate seat. It praises Hon BR Daggett as a resident and statesman of first class ability and integrity. It also mentions Hon C C Powning and Tom Wren of Eureka as capable, honest options for representing Nevada.
The Nations Divorce Reform League, formed in 1881 with Christian bodies among its members, presses Representatives to require a national census of marriage and divorce across states and territories. The group, with limited resources, cites alarming divorce data and notes that New England states have begun to modify their laws.
The Genoa Courier laments ongoing wrangling over sacks and sack candidates and the idea of a California man as U S Senator. It argues Nevada appears dependent on California and immigrants view the state coldly, urging a bold turn to elect a true Nevadan to the Senate.
The Oroville Register urges construction of the Reno and Mohawk Valley road to reach Plumas and Sierra counties, promising development of quartz mills and rich iron and copper mines. The proposed line would connect Mohawk Valley to Quincy, down the river to Oroville, and stimulate mining capital long withheld by transport difficulties.
The text notes the deaths of owners of three major U S art collections: Vanderbilt, Morgan, and Stewart. The Vanderbilt gallery stays closed but intact. The Morgan treasures have been dispersed. Harry Clark filed a location on Jones & Kinkead claim with General Clart noting mortgage holders have done $100 worth of work but owners must perform the required work. T K Hymers also located on the claim. Several other claims were jumped early in 1887.
Advice to mothers urges use of Mrs Winslow's soothing Syrup for Children Teething to relieve night distress from a sick child. Claims cure all manner of infant ailments and offers 25 cent bottles, with reference to Dr Slominski locating in Reno for medical practice.
