Uncle George Schaeffer suffered a severe accident last Thursday when a kingbolt failed in a buggy near Truckee. He sustained a bad head wound and was shaken, but reported improvement and good health ahead. A letter from Canton Ohio notes strong anti McKinley sentiment countywide and a possible defeat two to one. Syrup of Figs advertised for constipation and relief of a range of ailments.
H H Beck, Reno Reduction Works manager, revived the quartz milling plant using a low-cost method to process desert gold and silver ores. The new system uses two wet-crushing batteries, quicksilver-coated plates, and electric concentration to recover fine gold, promising profitable ore handling at two to five dollars per ton. The mill now operates on Desert mines ore near Mirage and White Plains, with Lovelock owners and Jim Blaine Mining Company carloads awaiting processing.
The facility now uses four methods to extract metals: a 50 ton per day water jacket smelter, a chlorination process for silver ores, amalgamation without roasting, and a detailed gold ore process. When silver gains prominence, the works may process 100 tons daily and employ about 100 workers at fair wages.
This hotel under the able management of Mr and Mrs Dan Hickey is fast becoming the most popular in town with Mrs Hickey personally overseeing rooms and table. John Hayes, known to all, is master of ceremonies in the front office ensuring patrons receive the best of treatment.
The last Pullman sleeper trip from this point will stop at Truckee. Passengers must seek odd berths on through cars or telegraph to Truckee for accommodation. The sleeper greatly aided Carson and Virginia travel. a through Pullman from here is considered but not guaranteed.
In a Carson dispatch dated August 22 1896 teachers in Nevada would receive half fare on railroad travel for school term beginnings and endings. J H Goodman Southern Pacific replies that rates will be case by case, with benefits potentially extended to trips between terms upon presentation to the railroad officials. Letter from H Q Corrina forwarded for publication and broader acceptance.
The Sacramento Bee reports Senator Henry M. Teller, Colorado silver champion, has agreed to speak in the Pavilion at the State Fair venue in Sacramento next month. The Silver League of California urged his appearance as a silver orator, predicting a large statewide crowd. Details of debates may be settled at tomorrow's State Board of Agriculture meeting.
More Bryan Republicans from Verdi and Glendale announce plans to vote for Bryan this year. M J Smith Eben Palmer and H Northrop express discontent with Hanna Republicanism and pledge party interests support.
