The Board of Commissioners for the care of the Insane has ousted Dr. Dawson as Superintendent of the Insane Asylum and appointed Dr. Bishop in his place. Commissioner Huffaker sided with the majority at a prior meeting, and Dawson refused to resign. The Journal offers cautious praise for Bishop, noting his twenty years in the community and clean record, while urging strict accountability for the board and foresight in administration.

The Nicaragua Canal Company, citing progress by its financial managers in New York and other centers, plans to start canal operations as soon as the season ends. An e xpert engineer, Aneeito G Menocal, who surveyed both routes and advised the Paris Canal Conference, supports the Nicaragua route and will supervise once operations begin. He estimates forty five million dollars needed, promises no delays awaiting Congress, and says the canal could be completed and in operation within five years.
The Post Office Department announces the death of Timothy C. Howe in Kenosha Wisconsin on the 25th inst. He is praised as an able, honest statesman with public service marked by justice and cool judgment. The department will fly a half‑masted flag for 30 days, close the 28th for the funeral, drape in mourning 30 days, and offices will close 2 to 6 pm that day. Frank Horton acting Postmaster General.
The town of Macon in Oxford County Maine elects officers including Moderator J A Bean Clerk J C Bean Selectmen J H Bean and F I Bean Treasurer F J Bean Supervisor of schools J H Bean and Agent J C Bean Sydney Smith ill and advised to walk on an empty stomach. The ad promotes Dr Pierce Golden Medical Discovery and Pleasant Purgative Pellets, urged for sedentary or chronic stomach and bowel issues.
The Southern Pacific Railway published special forward rates from Los Angeles to eastern markets for green fruit and vegetables. Freight for green fruit to Kansas City and St. Louis runs 180 to 192 dollars per hundred, with other cities like New York and Philadelphia at 227 dollars. Vegetables and citrus follow similar tiered rates, enabling early shipments to eastern markets and a potential monopoly through winter. Local praise says the railroad has consistently met Los Angeles county needs for three years.
The Susanville Advocate reports Eurastus Bond, government timber agent, has visited town to curb unauthorized cutting on government land.
