Poison Plot Almost Killed Washington in 1776
Historian Lossing described a New York City plot to poison General Washington during the summer of 1776 as British reinforcements loomed. A conspiracy led by Governor Tryon and funded by Mayor Mathews included an Irish immigrant Hickey and a housekeeper Frynkes whose betrayal saved Washington. Hickey was executed after conviction for treason, and the tale ends noting a saved fate for the nation due to one loyal woman.
