Wreck of the Flava Charter Sends Many to Death
The screw steamer Flava Charter sailed from Melbourne August 26 with 338 passengers and 112 crew. A ferocious sea, wrecking the ship on rugged shores, claimed nearly 500 lives as survivors clung to rocks, watched kin slip away, and brave sailors ferried others to safety amid chaotic scenes and a final breakup at dawn.

Anecdote Reveals Irving’s Humble Sociability at Sea
The Spirit of the Times recounts Washington Irving’s sociable yet modest nature. A contractor in Twenty-ninth Street befriends a plain gentleman in shabby dress visiting his yard for months to learn about New York’s water project. On a Hudson ride, the captain reveals Irving was aboard and the contractor’s conversations with him spanned six months, ending in mutual astonishment.

Death of Washington Irving Described in Sudden Illness
The article details Washington Irving's final hours marked by heart pain and breathing difficulty, followed by a quiet, cheerful departure after a night of sleeplessness. It notes his last moments with relatives, the sudden collapse, and the confirmation of death despite medical aid, ending with a reflective moral comparing earthly care to spiritual neglect.
