A brief life sketch of Brigadier General John H. Winder, son of Maj. Geo. Wm. IT. Winger of Maryland. Born February 1800 in Somerset County Maryland, West Point graduate 1820, frontier service, Florida War, Mexico War, Cherubusco major, Mexico siege lieutenant colonel, then colonel. Joined Confederacy April 20 1861, rose to Brigadier General, commanded department of Leurico, Richmond area, then Confederate prison camps in Georgia, later Commissary General of prisons East of the Mississippi. Survived by two sons Captain W. S. Winder and Captain John C. Winder. cousin to Brig. Gen. Charles Winder and Col. Edward Winder. From Columbia South Carolinian.
