Deserters Bill Up For Action In Legislature

Gen Lee nominated as General-in-Chief postponed

Richmond January 31 report states General Lee’s nomination for General-in-Chief was delayed by presidential illness preventing signature. Grant’s flag of truce exchange at Petersburg enabled Confederate commissioners to travel to Grant’s headquarters then to Washington. Confederate House passes post free carriage bill for soldiers with 65 yeas 13 nays.

Civil War Report From Charleston and Richmond

From Charleston on January 31 a Confederate force concentrates near Augusta and Branchville while the 20th army corps holds Robertsville. Infantry and artillery are encamped near Salketchie junction, likely 15th and 17th army corps. An enemy advance from White Point drove in our line to Kinga Creek, then retreated to White Point. A pontoon bridge show of force at Salketchie yielded no action. In Richmond the New York Tribune notes shippings losses and British register use for vessels trading with Brazil. Grant is gifted thirty thousand dollars by Philadelphia citizens. McClellan sails for Europe. the American hotel and other buildings burn in Buffalo.
