Dreadful Loss of Life in the River Thames

A severe river disaster near Southwark Bridge on Saturday night left seven sailors dead or missing after a small boat carrying four Gravesend and Gravesend bound seamen overturned while attempting to fetch a man from the Orion steam vessel. The coroner’s inquest found the four men drowned in an accidental incident linked to a suicide threat by Joseph Thornton, who remained missing.

Drowning scare near the custom-house in London
