Adultery and murder case shocks Lozere court in France

At Mende in Lozere, Etienne Rouquette died after poison was given by his wife Elizabeth Renouard and Victor Almeras. The trial heard of a violent domestic quarrel, a planned poison plot, and arsenic found in Rouquette’s stomach. Renouard was convicted of murder and sentenced to life hard labor and the pillory, while Almeras was acquitted amid extenuating circumstances. Public anger over perceived leniency grew as other local poisonings were recalled.
