In a History and Politics column the newspaper denounces lord Londonderry and Frances Ann Vane Londonderry for pressuring Durham election workers, arguing the ballot is essential to prevent aristocratic control. It questions royal exhortations and urges public action to defend open voting system.
A Brighton town meeting outlined a grand reception for Queen Victoria with a ceremonial procession, arches, barriers, and charity feasts. The plan includes a triumphal arch, tickets for guests, and a show ship anchor idea off the coast. Thalberg’s palace concert and Lablache’s praise of the Queen’s singing are noted.
The fourth and last meeting ends with superb racing and a large crowd. Also reports on aquatics, cricket matches, and a deadly shipwreck near Liverpool with multiple fatalities.
An inquest held at Gravesend Town Hall into the Apollo steam vessel disaster examined identity of the deceased Ann Jones and detailed early testimony. Captains Granger and Bain described the collision, rescue efforts, and survival, with adjournments to gather further evidence including crew testimonies and the fate of the Monarch and Apollo.
On September 11 the Lords prorogued parliament until October 2 after a brief ceremony. The writ for further prorogation was read by the clerk of the House of Lords with no Commons in attendance. Lords not in robes, the prorogation followed solemn directions from the Lord Chancellor.
At a Wrexham dinner on the 25th alt R M Lloyd chaired a toast to Liberal Clergymen. Thomas Edgworth condemned a rich pluralist Rev Edward South Thurlow of Hope Parish for fifty six years unseen by parishioners and then seen voting Tory. He cited £600 annual income and a single sermon given in return. The speaker urged reform to protect the church.
A middle aged man James Cook was sentenced to three months in the House of Correction for fraud against love suitors and attacked police during arrest. Separate notes report police conduct in court, a poisoning accident harming a child, a drowning on the Thames, and city mayoral succession speculation with Aldermen Cowan Wood and Harmer among nominees.
A London paper criticizes Henry Thomas Liddell and Lord Londonderry for pressuring tenants and workers in Durham to vote Conservative. The letter from Holdernesse-house urges tenantry to back Liddell in a “northern division” election, portraying Londonderrys as controlling and hypocritical in parliamentary influence. Critics call the letter an overbearing misuse of patronage and a display of political coercion.
A Gray's Inn commission of lunacy investigates Christopher Alderson born deaf and dumb and heir to Baron Hall Farm Middlesex. Dr. Sutherland and surgeon witness describe his imbecile mind, ignorance of numbers, and lack of sex distinction. jury finds unsound mind since April 30 1832.
Reports from West India papers recount a June mutiny at St Josephs Trinidad where 150 captives, recently added to the 1st West India regiment, rose against officers. They seized ammunition, burned barracks, fled to woods, and eight are found dead from wounds or strangulation. Colonels Bush and Jackson and Lieut Guiseppe distinguished themselves. interpreters were scarce. Inquest into Jacob Cohen 61 of a general merchant class returned a verdict of Natural Death.
