The Cotton Supply Association reports two gins set up in Malta for public use one in Zebbug and another in a Gozo government house. The Malta census shows national cotton output rising from 3.5 to 4.5 million pounds this year. Experiments with foreign seeds progress. Egypt and New Orleans varieties shown promising.
Inquiries at Baalbek report 1 000 acres planted with cotton in 1863 and 8 000 in 1864. Output totaled 36 000 lbs in 1863 and is expected to reach 180 000 lbs in 1864, sent to Beirut.
