Veteran George Lewis Remains at 88 Despite Pension Doubts

An elderly veteran from St Philip's parish, Bethnal Green, George Lewis, aged 88, a former guard, seaman, and Gibraltar siege participant, has kept his army pension alive after years of living modestly. He served 26 years in the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards and Navy aboard Goliath. His wife has often managed his pension, but officials at Horse Guards recently questioned his continued life. He proved identity before Worship Street magistrate, and continues to rely on pension and St Philip's Visiting Society for support.
