Racing Notes From Newmarket Second October Meeting

At Newmarket the second October meeting opened with two year olds racing for stakes in brisk, uncertain weather. Elimea won the T.Y.C. event beating Wands and Slug with Carissima and Circus close behind. Other races included the Cesarewitch contenders and several stakes for two and three year olds with notable performances by Rodney, Grief, The Traverser, Nectar, and Dacia. The Cesarewitch draw and betting opened amid crowding on the heath and a cautious but eventful day of racing amid frequent changes in fortune.

Wrecked brig Manilla at Santibobo ends in protracted defense

An 1847 Straits Times abridgement recounts the brig Manilla from Hongkong to the Sacluo Archipelago. After a leak forced the vessel ashore on Santibobo, natives attacked repeatedly. Captain Jones and a small garrison held a wooden fort with six guns, repelling five sustained assaults. Surviving crew built prows to seek help at Menado, while natives later traded for provisions. The defense endured months of sieges with several wounded, a fever outbreak, and eventual quiet mutuality as aid arrived.

New Waterproof Paletot Cloth Mis the Pride of Regent Street

In commerce there is little novelty beside cotton progress yet a new cloth for Paletot use has been secretly produced for Nicholl of Regent Street. It blends foreign wool with Vienna Liama fibers forming a fabric that repels water. The back of the Paletot remains hidden, inspired by nature, feathers, and animal fur, making wear dry and warm while avoiding waterproofing drawbacks.
