Brave defense and wreck of the brig Manila near Santiboho

An 1847 report details the Manila of Baltimore leaving Hongkong July 3 for the Sanluo Archipelago with 32 crew. After two months, the brig foundering forced a shore landing at Santibobo. Natives attacked repeatedly, the crew fortified a wooden breastwork with six guns, repelled several assaults, and endured fever, casualties, and multiple prow attempts. Captain Jones and a small party eventually set out for Manilla seeking aid, while remaining crew and survivors faced ongoing threats from nearby islands.
