Afghan Insurrection Fails Against Pollock Force at Kandahar

Dispatches describe the January engagement with Khan and Prince Fata Jung, where Afghan resistance collapsed under General Nott's 5.5 infantry regiments, 1,000 cavalry, and 16 guns. Afghan casualties ran about 400. British losses were light. Reports note Ghuznee besieged but held, Attakhan’s failure to rally tribes, and speculation on relief moves via Kandahar passes. Musings on Shah Soojah, Akhbar Khan, and Cabul politics dominate further letters from Jellalabad and Cabul.

The piece notes India’s overall calm but warns against complacency after killings and mutinous undercurrents in Madras regiments and regional tensions in Judpore and Onde, with the Burmese king returning to Rangoon and the Afghan war looming.
