The Protestant Association's annual gathering drew a full house in Exeter Hall on Wednesday with Lord Kenyon presiding. Rev. Holloway opened with prayer as speakers praised Protestant advances abroad and at home, including Ireland and Maynooth funding, while resolutions urged continued opposition to papal influence and Romish grants. The meeting adjourned after adopting a report praising progress and a manifesto opposing certain church reforms.
A Sunday night crash on the Paris Versailles line killed about 50 and wounded around 150 as a long left bank train derailed near the Chemin des Gardes. Fire engines and troops failed to halt the spread. steeple of Nicolai church collapsed. Jungferstieg and Borsenhalle threatened. authorities debated mass demolitions to create firebreaks as the wind shifted and public structures burned.
