Hampden Memorial honors civil liberty at Chalgrove field
In 1643 Hampden fell at Chalgrove while defending Parliament's liberties. A monument was unveiled after a crowded gathering of gentry and villagers. Lord Nugent led tributes praising Hampden's resistance to arbitrary rule, the cause of free monarchy, and the principle that taxation require parliamentary consent.
