Southwark Election Case over Bribery and Treating

In a Southwark borough election dispute, Lord Denman presided over a jury ruling a plaintiff owed £89 14s 6d for refreshments supplied by publicans during the 1839 campaign. Experimental Shell Trials at Woolwich Under Royal Observers

A mid afternoon test at Woolwich saw Captain Belson command a party of artillery testing percussion shells by Wilkinson Napier and Reece. Trials used seven 32 pounders and six 32 pounders at 400 yard range with a mock ship bulwark, barge delays, and barge towing. Royal officers witnessed each shell’s behavior and results, with mixed effects including shells exploding near and through the bulwark and one failing to explode. Destructive fires followed in Marylebone and Ospringe as separate incidents.
