Readers confront a long accusatory papyrus alleging Renn Dickson Hampden consorts with Puseyite doctrine. The document brands Hampden as untrue to the Articles, questions his Orthodoxy, and presses for disciplinary action amid editorial derision and threatened ecclesiastical proceedings.
A labourer named Duckworth was murdered near Castletown at the gate of a hall owned by cotton manufacturer Mr Richard Kay. Witness John Kay heard four blows, found Duckworth in a pool of blood near the public house yard, and two suspects Tetler and Garnett later linked to the scene. Wolstenholme was arrested after investigators tied footprints and cart fragments to the public house yard. Duckworth leaves a wife and several children.
