Dean Swim of Stonington representing Pratt Baxter Grain Co of Taylorville was killed when his shotgun discharged as he alighted from a buggy northwest of Pana. The weapon struck his side as he had just killed a rabbit and was preparing to retrieve it.
Dr Stearns a leading Pomona physician was an unwilling combatant in a bull fight. He sustained injuries and will be bedbound for some time. The ferocious bull knocked him down and would have killed him without timely intervention by several men.

William Meek, a young man living south of Edwardsville, shot himself in a barn after relatives opposed his marriage. He died almost instantly, leaving grieving family and a note of tragedy in the community.
Frederick Cook, four year old son of Frank Cook near Quincy, died after his clothing caught fire while playing with matches, the fatal burn reported as a household accident.

Mrs. Czolgosz mother of the man who attempted to assassinate President McKinley arrived in Buffalo on Monday. She did not seek out her son, who later learned of her presence.
