On the 3d the steamer Rosedale with 150 passengers aboard was struck off Broome street by a Twenty-third street ferry boat and sank in five minutes. All passengers were reportedly saved by passing craft en route to Bridgeport. Also noted a Newark leather factory fire on the 4th causing $50,000 loss with $30,000 insured. Bodies of Rev. T. F. Reeser and John D. Love found in the Juniata river after fishing incident.

Dr Geomer Brown Goone was assistant secretary of the Smithsonian institution and head of the National museum in Washington died of pneumonia on the 7th at Lanier Heights. He represented Smithsonian at the Columbian and Atlanta expositions and authored several scientific works. Born in New Albany Indiana in 1851. A telegram notes Key West excitement over a Havana letter claiming Spanish authorities planned arson in the city. New York banks report declines in reserves loans deposits and tenders with mixed changes in specie and circulation. Steiner reports a second power and labor saving machine exhibition planned for Munich in 1898 inviting American manufacturers. Illinois state news reports a farmer Lou Wilson of Neponset killed his wife and four year old son then himself. Found by worker William Malson, Wilson appeared despondent and in financial distress prior to the tragedy. Also recounted are a bank swindle involving R B Purdum and a bloodhound chase for Lizzie Pearson near Broadlands in Champaign county.

Alleged Robbers Arrested After three months, four men from Lovington were jailed in Tuscola for robbing George Kolb last June. The entry involved six masked men beating a seven person family and looting a farmer’s safe. Dragged to Death by a Mule A 14 year old, Col Adams son of Postmaster Adams, was killed near Louisville when a mule bolted as he tried to load a sack of corn. The corps was found tied to the animal with injuries noted.

Brenton Harton Michigan Sept 7. Yore's opera house and nearby buildings burned early yesterday killing eleven firefighters and injuring many others. The blaze caused extensive destruction, with a total loss estimated at about 635000. Names of dead and injured include Frank Watson and Arthur Hill from St Joseph Benton Harbor residents among the injured. The rear wall collapsed trapping crews delaying rescues. the fire was controlled by five o'clock. Funeral services planned for all firemen the next day.
Wholesale jail delivery in Huntmeror West Virginia reports John Love who faced murder charges escaped Saturday night with five other prisoners. The breakout occurred after chisels were used and alarms were raised by fellow inmates. Guards and local posses launched a search but details remain sparse.
