Provincial town mayors in England who hold land estates have refused reappointment, saying they are too busy with their landed interests to serve again. Meanwhile American and Canadian apple growers are flooding London markets as English crops wane, with brokers selling tens of thousands of barrels in hours.
Spain’s outstanding obligations total 1.42 billion dollars not counting 240 million Cuban debt for which Spain is liable. Over half of current revenues go to interest. Madrid seeks a new 200 million loan to fund Cuban and Philippine wars, a financial strain fueling Cuban patriots’ hope.

Conrad Ercuorn, a Toledo cigarmaker, turned on gas in a hotel room occupied by himself and his 13-year-old son. Both were found dead on the morning of the 6th. The week’s business failures in the U S numbered 240, Canada logged 52, with prior-year contrasts. A Cyprus evacuation report was denied, and the steamer Tiberias collided with the Maggie near St John’s, causing 13 deaths among the 14 passengers onboard.

Official. Returns Total. This will insure McKinley's election by a large majority in the electoral college if every other vote goes against him. Another significant fact is that McKinley and Hobart's victory is assured by a plurality over a million of the popular vote, the largest ever given. Confidence expressed that Wyoming Kentucky North Carolina are in doubt.
The 1896 proclamation designates November 26 as a day of thanksgiving and prayer. President Grover Cleveland urges national repentance, gratitude, and charitable deeds, calling upon citizens to worship, seek divine guidance, and aid the poor, with seal of the United States and Secretary of State Richard Olney noted.
A signed statement from Republican headquarters reports McKinley with no less than 264 electoral votes based on state returns and telegrams. States listed include Connecticut Delaware Illinois Indiana Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota New Hampshire New Jersey New York North Dakota Ohio Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Dakota Vermont Wisconsin with Kentucky North Carolina and Wyoming in doubt. The note notes Indiana margins near 25,000 to 30,000 and claims full state ticket and legislature gains in North Dakota, with South Dakota legislature still in doubt.
