J. L. Burton, a country merchant on Eagle creek, was shot from a bush near Harrisburg while skiffing toward his home. He was killed instantly and robbed of the money he planned to use for paying goods. The boat with his body later drifted back near his shop.
H. C. Mull, a Woburn merchant, fell ill after receiving a threatening letter demanding 600 dollars. The note warned of harm to his family if he refused. Mull relapsed and is now considered unlikely to recover. no arrest has been made.
Coal operators of Illinois plan a state wide combine for the principal mines. The projected corporation would be one of the nation’s giants with $75,000,000 capital, control of 900 mines and 39,000 employees. It is claimed an organization is needed to counter the Pennsylvania Coal trust.

The body of John Gregson a well known farmer living near Red Bud was found in a creek by his home. He had gone fishing on Sunday and reportedly fell into the stream during a fainting spell.
Rev. J Forrest Marston of Owensville Indiana pleaded guilty in the United States district court at Springfield to forging money orders and was sentenced to 18 years in Chester Penitentiary.
The home of F. M. Bolt, Jr. near Ramsey burned down. Mrs. Bolt, described as an invalid who had not left bed for a year, woke, stood, and walked from the house to safety.
Sidney Pell aged eight was instantly killed while sawing wood when a buzz saw flywheel broke striking him and severing his head near Sycamore. The accident is reported as an untimely end with authorities investigating the cause of the mechanical failure.

At 3 15 pm the body reconvened and announced committee appointments including Roads and Bridges Neese Warehouses Cavanah Glade and William Sullivan, Revenue Spiegel Crawford, Municipal Corporations Kopf, Education Farnum and Crawford, County and Township Organization Wheeler, Building Loan Associations Farnum, and Fish and Game Wheeler. The session adjourned until five on Monday.

Jones of Clark proposed a bill to create a state board of steam boiler inspectors. Bowles proposed repealing the act establishing a branch appellate court in Chicago. Fred W. Rowe, chairman of the Republican state committee, called a meeting at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon to discuss apportionment.
In Springfield on March 19 the senate resident pro tem Brenholt presided as bills were passed and amendments made on second reading. A resolution of respect to the late George Hunt was adopted at a funeral in the afternoon. The house delayed appropriation bills, advanced calendar items, and concurred in a senate resolution urging Col. Lloyd Wheaton be promoted to major general. An amendment reducing a National Guard deficiency fund bill to 50 000 was defeated 84 to 47.
