The United States transport Solace reached San Francisco on the 4th after a stormy voyage from Manila. S. Locasio, an Italian band master long connected with the marine corps, committed suicide by leaping from the vessel on February 10.

Mr Cannon's house speech drew sharp replies from Tillman and the senate conferees. Executive session referred pending treaties to foreign relations, adjourned to Monday. War on wire deserters announced by Judge Hough. Mrs Georgia Stanley died after being found unconscious beside Maj. Hurd's body in Denver. D KR Francis left Paris for Madrid to urge Spain's expo participation. Three men acquitted in Chicago of turf investment gaming house charges. Olympia senate approved 5000 for St Louis exposition exhibit. Mr and Mrs J C Dickerson of Jasper county Ala fatally wounded by a burglar.
Central America faces an imminent general war while domestic topics include Virginia abandoning a separate World’s fair building. Obituaries note the death of Capt. John J. Mitchell of the Chicago and Alton Railroad in St. Louis and James Noonan’s body recovered near Yazoo Canal. Other items report August Kleykamp Jr. found dead by asphyxiation in St. Louis, and the Good Roads convention set for St. Louis in April with foreign participation invited by Secretary Hay.
In Alton Illinois a distressed widow Rhoda Jackson and her three children burned furniture for fuel to survive a severe cold. Mrs S Demuth of the Alton Provident association moved the family to the Edwardsville poor farm but Jackson resisted leaving her hut and attempted an escape with the children walking 16 miles back toward Alton. The case highlights the widow’s attachment to her derelict home and the Provident association’s efforts to intervene.
Mrs. Ben Mercer dropped a box of strychnine pills while cleaning a Decatur sideboard. Her 20 month old daughter picked up the box and ate six pills before they could be removed. The child died within twenty minutes. the mother was left prostrated by the shock.
Dixon voters chose Henry S. Dixon as mayor by a substantial majority over incumbent F. A. Tru man. Alderman winners include George F. Stainbrook in the first ward, Edcand ward Frederick G. Dunick, Thomas A. Barber in the third ward, and James W. Watts in the fourth ward.
At a council meeting the Granville city council approved an ordinance cutting pay for the mayor aldermen and city attorney to one dollar per year. Previously the mayor earned 50 dollars annually the aldermen 24 dollars and the city attorney 75 dollars.
Arnimo Barnardino shot Felia Spezzia in Westville while aiming at Torquatto Tarnetto. A year earlier Tarnetto was fired at and missed, and a bystander was killed, with the killer now serving a penitentiary term. In Springfield a conference of Illinois coal operators and miners settled differences across six districts agreeing on a six cent per ton Indianapolis schedule.
The first annual convention of the Illinois Commercial Hotel association was held at Bloomington. The association was organized last fall at an informal meeting held at Peoria.
A blaze gutted Joseph Mathern's saloon at Assumption causing about 1200 dollars in damage. Prompt action by the fire department averted a larger fire.

Reed Eckard killed by a falling tree ten miles north of St Elmo while retrieving a squirrel.
A permit was issued by the auditor of public accounts for the organization of the State Bank of Rochelle with a capital stock of 25000 dollars. In Galesburg, celebrations mark the fiftieth anniversary of Rev. Joseph Costa's elevation to the priesthood with elaborate ceremonies.

Robert A. Armstrong, private secretary to Secretary Shaw, has taken the oath as assistant secretary of the treasury to succeed Gen. O L Spaulding. Born Aug 19, 1873 near Des Moines Iowa he worked as a printer, journalist, political writer for the Chicago Record and New York Herald before joining Secretary Shaw as private secretary in April 1902.
In St Louis on the Wabash dispute officials of labor groups face a move to dissolve the federal injunction issued by Judge Adams. Affidavits will be filed to argue against making the injunction permanent. A permanent dissolution could prompt a strike if Ramsey refuses demands. experts warn it could end railroad strikes nationwide.
