New York imports of diamonds rise to 2,085,435 from January to April 1898. Iowa’s Fifty-first regiment arrives in San Francisco, best equipped yet.

A Peoria dispatch reports a drunken mob attacked Reverend Walter B. Irwin and his bride Bes sie Crane at Deer Creek after their wedding. The bride was struck, the minister torn, attendants injured, and the wedding party aided onto a train as bricks shattered windows. Lake Erie & Western officials vow prosecutions.
The fifth annual state convention of the Illinois Grain Dealers association was held in Decatur with over 200 grain men and farmers in attendance. President Tanner opened, stating the aim to correct trade evils caused by shortages in key markets and push for uniform fair grain inspection. He noted unanimous opposition to current warehouse laws, which must be amended or repealed to secure a fair business environment.
In Carbondale 800 students and friends gathered in the assembly hall of the Southern Illinois Normal University to honor the late Prof S M Inglis state superintendent of public instruction. He served nearly fifteen years here as trustee faculty member and president of the board of trustees. Faculty and students read and adopted resolutions of respect. Illinois livestock commission designates Winnebago County as an experimental station. Three hundred southern cattle will be shipped to the area and allocated to farms under the direction of Dr. B. B. Page of Rockford for major experiments.
B F Duncan aged 55 former Moline resident was instantly killed by lightning while telephoning at the Stude baker works in South Bend Indiana. He was chief lumber inspector. His wife and daughter live in Rockford.
Edward Kehl a young prosperous farmer near Peoria in despair over his wife mental illness ended his life by a shotgun blast. Three children are left orphaned and without parental care.
Quincy James Reed a porter at the Sherman house killed Albert Elmore a bricklayer of Keokuk with a billiard cue. A crowd at the hotel including Elmore had mocked the porter.
The second annual picnic of the McDonough county Modern Woodmen occurred at Bushnell fair grounds. The Macomb camp won the prize banner.
The pacing stallion Guinette a $20,000 entry with John Gentry and owned by James A Murphy of Chicago passed away recently after a race. The horse had a 2:05 mile time and was a noted performer on the circuit.
Carl Rickman, a well known Washington youth, died while swimming with companions when cramps struck him in a pond. The tragedy occurred during a leisure outing, prompting inquiries into safety and rescue response.
During a thunder storm near Tower Hill Frederick Shanks was struck by lightning while plowing corn and his leg broken, his team killed.
On board the Dauntless off Guantanamo, Lieut.-Col. Huntington’s marines repelled a Spanish assault after a 13 hour engagement. Four Marines killed and one wounded. including Assistant Surgeon John Blair Gibbs, son of Maj. Gibbs, with Private McColgan and Private Dunphy shot in the head. Spanish losses unknown but likely heavy.
Washington reports Manila has fallen but details unclear. Ambassador Hay in London said Hong Kong advices claimed the city’s fall without naming the conqueror. Officials suspect insurgent influence over the surrender, with Dewey's fleet awaiting reinforcement and not yet informed of the outcome.
The Porto Rico note reports Walter Bett formerly linked to Crawford the British consul at San Juan de Puerto Rico was ordered to leave Porto Rico after being accused of supplying information to United States authorities on mines and fortifications. Spaniards call this a neutrality breach while refugees arrive and observers warn of famine as conditions worsen.
