The 5-year-old daughter of O P Steed of Hawthorne township White county died from an unusual cause. While playing she tried catching grains of corn in her mouth. Eighteen grains were removed, she seemed better, then a severe coughing spell led to death before a doctor could arrive. Post mortem found a grain of corn in the larynx causing strangulation.

Dr Emmet Enos former chief of medical staff at Kankakee insane hospital died at the Elgin asylum. He resigned last February, diagnosed his own case, hoped for recovery through quiet living. Salt Lake City July 17 A magazine detonation at the Daly West mine on the 1200 foot level in Park City Utah trapped 150 workers. By 4 pm 24 bodies were recovered and 21 others were dying. Gas prevented deeper entry with 105 men still inside. Rescue efforts halted as gas remained dangerous and two rescuers James Smith and Jack Barton faced critical injuries. Authorities said only three more bodies were left in the mine and a partial count placed 33 recovered from two mines.

Washington July 18 Captain Ludlam of Hereford Inlet life saving station reports a remarkable recovery of Stanley Holmes a five year old boy after he was submerged for 25 minutes. Within four hours of removal from the water the child regained consciousness according to Superintendent Kimball of the life saving station.
