Tragic Bristol Bridge Disaster Drops Six Hundred
A July Fourth crowd of about six hundred on a three span bridge over the St Joseph river at Bristol, Indiana, was swept into five feet of water when the railing failed. Thirty eight feared dead and many injured as physicians from Elkhart Goshen and La Porte aided the wounded. The bridge collapse followed a boat race climax and left the town, its farms and nearby stores turned into improvised hospitals.

Browne Weakens Washington March Stop
Carl Browne, Coxey’s lieutenant, reached Washington with the army of the Commonweal but did not complete his plan to remarry Coxey’s daughter on the Capitol steps. He stayed at a hotel, rode the grounds thrice, wore the same leather coat and slouch hat, and avoided any legal trouble as a crowd gathered then dispersed.
