The Chicago Navy Cruiser Story and Its Power Upgrades

The Chicago was the largest of three protected cruisers forming the new navy with Atlanta and Boston. Built mainly by John Roach, later completed by the government, she measured 325 feet long and 40 feet 2 inches beam with 4,500 tons displacement. Initially rigged as a bark and commanded by a White Squadron flagship, she featured a 376 crew and a main battery including four 8 inch guns and a rapid-fire secondary suite. In a Brooklyn Navy Yard remodel, 6 inch and 5 inch guns were replaced by 5 inch rapid-fire guns, increasing offensive firepower. Her original compound engines used a unique twin-cylinder arrangement with walking beams and overhead shafts, powered by externally fired boilers. Modern triple-expansion engines and nickel steel boilers will replace them, marking the first use of such tech in the navy.
