The American ambassador to Germany Theodore F. Runyon died in Berlin from heart failure at one o'clock this morning. Born October 26, 1822 in Somerville New Jersey, he attended Yale and held major roles in Newark and New Jersey politics including mayor and state militia leader. He served as chancellor of New Jersey, and was appointed minister to Germany in 1893 and later ambassador.
Philadelphia reports Gen Calixto Garcia, Cuba's renowned general, has escaped Spanish surveillance and sailed last Thursday aboard the Bernard bound for Cuba. Gen Carola leads a formidable expedition with 300 plus men and arms aboard the Jasof, aiming for a landing near Pinar del Rio and Havana provinces.
