Local notes report births and convalescence, shop offerings, and social events. A son born to Dr and Mrs J J Brown headlines a busy week. The Presbyterian church annual meeting is moved to February 1. Local wind felled a mine smokestack and damaged a roof while others comment on business and community moves.
A pleasant surprise party honored Mr E H Klein on his 22nd birthday with games music and social chat. Refreshments were plentiful and included tea and other treats. Also noted is the death of F L Hampton at age 66 on January 24 in Troy Mo with funeral services and a life sketch.
Resolutions from Neilson Lodge No. 25 of the Independent Order of Pan Fellows note the passing of Brother Frank EL Hampton. Officers and members mourn his untimely departure, bow in submission to the Most High, and express sorrow while honoring his many virtues and service to the lodge.
A Masonic lodge records the death of Brother F L Hampton at his Troy home on Monday January 24, 1898. The resolutions honor his service to God and community, note a public mourning period, and request dissemination to family and local papers.
Aged minister Rev T W B Dawson perished in a cottage fire near town last Saturday between 3 and 4 am. The blaze destroyed the home and charred his remains inside an adjoining room. An inquest returned death by accident. Dawson, born 1809 in New York City, preached across Troy and nearby towns, taught school, and amassed a famed library and relic collection lost to the fire. He predicted fire would destroy the world in 1898 and spoke of his own ascent to heaven via a chariot of fire. The funeral was held at the Baptist church with large attendance.
