Congressman Loud Proposes Postage Rate Increases

Unprofitable economy dominates a report on Congressman Loud introducing a bill to raise postage rates. The measure seeks higher revenue for mail services amid fiscal strain facing the postal system and government budgets.

A Harmful Measure to Curtail Postal Reading Matter

The piece argues Congressman Loud of California seeks to raise postage on newspapers and periodicals to cover a postal deficit. It contends higher rates would cut reading matter, hurt book access, and urges public protest and rail freight reform to stabilize costs. It also condemns franking abuse and supports postal savings banks for public financial security.

Fragmented historic claims on people and places

A garbled OCR list cites figures about bicycle makers in Chicago, breech-loading cannons in 1888, centuries of Chinese gas use, Danish trade union members, Pharaoh era birthdays, a Fiji cannibal note, Queen Elizabeth's household size, Chinese dining order, UMW miners, Fiji pupils, California woodpecker lore, 1774 Philadelphia status, voice muscles, and a Sonoran tribe with yellow hair.

Extraordinary Bedstead Exhibited in 1888 Parte

In February 1888 an extraordinary bedstead of rare costliness was shown in Parte. Made for an Indian prince, its construction cost between four and five thousand pounds. The four automaton female figures in national styles opened and cooled the air while their eyes moved and a mattress acted as a large musical box playing operatic airs when sat upon. The figures were wigs to enhance the illusion, though bedsteads are meant for sleeping.

Year 1898 Foretells Eclipses And Holidays

A cleaned summary note lists 1898 began on Saturday and ends on Saturday with six eclipses, only two visible in North America, and dates for major holidays. It also notes the Hebrew year 5669 beginning, and the 128th year of American independence starting July 4. The piece adds a Bloomington Leader claim about Noah M. Pike growing coffee berries in Illinois and poses several riddles.
