The Weekly Call notes Missouri state senators gave a father of triplets $50 with a tongue in cheek pledge that he must never have more. It wryly questions prolific papas and their scant capital for big domestic ventures. A former Astor battery member from Manila recalls feeling scared and ashamed in combat.
Between 1893 and 1897 the count of sheep fell from 47 273 553 to 36 818 643 and their value dropped from 125 909 264 to 67 020 942. In the last two years the sheep population increased by over 2 000 000 and their value has been largely enhanced.
Bank clearances maintain their great gains over all past records. In the country at large they were 67 per cent greater last week than in the corresponding week in 1898, and over 100 per cent in excess of those of 1897. With these unparalleled gains there are also gains in railroad earnings. No such expansion in general trade ever occurred before in this country.

Also on the 1st Chicago & Alton directors declared a quarterly dividend of 144 percent on preferred and common stock payable March to stockholders of record February 10.
A Ta vana committee of Spaniards appeals to fellow countrymen across the island to unite to secure Cuba's annexation to the United States. The Chicago Chronicle on the 3d notes plans to form a broad coalition covering all grades of oatmeal and other breakfast foods for bulk and package sales, to be launched soon.
Telegrams report Mr Alfen Nebraska offering a resolution about the peace treaty linking the Philippine islands and Porto Rico to the United States as Cuba was linked postwar. Aguinaldo attacks Manila lines. Dewey bombs insurgent trenches. Admiral Dewey commands in Manila Bay as Otis holds the position. Col Sexton of the Grand Army dies in Washington. Anti-Dreyfus unrest in Marseilles leads to injuries and arrests. John Comstock dies in Treasury customs. Burlesque actress Alice Merton dies in New York City.
Senate passes a pension measure carrying 145 million dollars. Reports include a church fire in Macon Missouri a man’s suicide Wilt County Illinois a woman’s paralysis death near Sedalia Missouri and multiple fatal incidents across several states.
Illinois death notices list numerous locals from Greene, Coles, Dewitt, and other counties, including Mrs H Tomlinson at Maroon and James Dalton of Pana. Civil war veterans, prominent lawyers, merchants, and a former mayor are noted among the aged dead. Also reported is the Joliet dignitary John W Jennings dying in Las Cruces at 23 with a $500,000 estate. A Peoria motor bus line is planned to challenge streetcars with rubber-tired buses serving center and suburbs.
Chicago editor Joseph Dunlop completed a two year penitentiary term for publishing obscene literature. He was met by his nephew Ernest Dunlop Frank Cooper and W C Roberts and returned to Chicago to resume newspaper work. In Lake Forest Illinois poisoning sickened the Van Gilder family with Mrs Van Gilder dying and others recovering. In Cazenovia Woodford county William Beecher 85 and his wife 70 died within hours of a like disease. Fred and Charles Gerber aged ten and four died in a Gilman fire left alone by their mother. The Kankakee Asylum trustees accepted the resignation of Dr W C Sterns and elected Dr J C Corbus. Charles Brown 30 insane in Kankakee near a church. County treasurers met at Springfield to organize for compensation. George W Cannedy 62 died suddenly from heart failure near Greenfield.
Springfield reports detail Senator Stubblefield pushing a tramp registration bill with fines and certificates for vagrants, plus roads to be used for new street railway rules. Other items include resolutions on McKinsey, aid to soldiers, Western normal school, a sugar beet bounty bill, Paris expo shows, and various committee actions in both chambers.
