The War Department released Capt W R Abercrombie's report on the Copper River exploring expedition in Alaska detailing the proposed trans-Alaskan military route from Port Valdes to Port Egbert on the Yukon. The American Window Glass Co directors in Pittsburgh ordered further price cuts amid wartime competition with independent manufacturers. A London news relief followed reports of Gen Buller’s night attack on Spionkop aiding British troops’ position.

Anna M Bowen dean of the Women’s Hall at Northwestern University in Chicago died of heart disease on the 28th. In Chicago Illinois Judge Kohlsaat voided the Illinois anti trust law as class and special legislation. Union Sewer Pipe Co of Ohio sues on notes for sewer pipe. defense claims Illinois statute exempts agricultural products. Judge Kohlsaat finds the ninth clause of the act void, strikes it and rules for plaintiff. Defendants plan to appeal to the U S Supreme Court.
In Frankfort on January 30 the legislature failed to meet after 11:30 am due to many absences and paired members. The Gill-Brister contest will report Tuesday. Smallpox scares Kentucky with about thirty five counties affected as state health officials contend with the outbreak.
Willam Shirley, 76, Staunton leader and Wabash railroad promoter, and Minnie Timmerman, 80, Bloomington resident, die. Elizabeth Swanwick Baker, 95, Randolph County’s oldest resident, and Elizabeth Vickery of Jacksonville, 77, are noted along with local figures Martha Horine Blooming ton business leader Guy Carlton and other deaths across Illinois towns. Cecil Chamberlain an 18 year old son of a leading Decatur businessman was arrested after tests showed he tried to extort 24 dollars from H. L. Oldham by threatening to reveal social and physical troubles. Oldham reported the unsigned note to police who watched a rock at College and William streets where Chamberlain appeared and began to search. He was indicted by a grand jury and released on 500 bond with his father W. D. Chamberlain furnishing the bail.
Frank Bunyard aged 28 married Orpha 18 and Mobert Bunyard aged 24 wed Alma 22 at Ke nosha Wisconsin. An older Bunyard sister had wed another brother a year and a half earlier. Mrs James Summers aged 31 was found dead on her child's grave in Woodland cemetery Quincy. The child had died two weeks prior and the mother, born Cora Bowman in Camp Point, died from grief and illness.

Frankfort Kentucky February 1 The court of appeals has indefinitely adjourned refusing to sit while the willtin is here. One reason for the adjournment is letters from Middlesboro stating that Appellate Judges Hazelrige and Hobson were to have been killed Tuesday.
Frankfort Kentucky February 1 Manager Weitzel of the Capitol hotel has been warned that if he permits a legislative meeting there the militia will assume charge.
In Frankfort Kentucky on January 31 Senator Goebel grows weaker and may die soon. Relatives arrive including Mrs Hermann Brannocker of Hartwell Ohio and Miss Margaret Partine. Goebel recognizes visitors with a smile as doctors warn the end is near.
