Assistant Secretary Allen received Capt. J C Greene letter from Havana stating contracts are signed to exhume Maine dead from Colon cemetery and transport them to the United States after the 15th inst. The Texas, to be used for the voyage, moves from Brunswick to Hampton Roads then to Havana. Remains will be brought to Washington for reinterment with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
Washington dispatches report the Port Stephens reached Honolulu November 25 after a sixteenth day voyage with gale winds from the west. A try to reach Kobe failed. Three days of hurricane winds lashed the ship. two mules died and others were injured. crews secured stalls as deck wear increased. Gen Otis informs the War Department of Maj Bronke CG Shittyrthird Infantry death in Manila on Monday from lymphatic disease.

Nebraska City Neb Dec 5 Senator Monroe L Hayward aged 59 died at 620 am after a career as a lawyer and land investor in Nebraska and Kansas He served in the Civil War in the Twenty second New York volunteers and later the Fifth cavalry He married Jennie Pelton in 1870 leaving a widow and two sons A bitter state political fight preceded his election to the U S Senate and he later suffered paralysis while addressing a political meeting He had lived in Nebraska City for 32 years and was defeated for governor by Poynter two years earlier
A boiler blast at a Joliet mill yesterday afternoon caused severe injuries to several men, with two reported missing. Patrick Soilleon and Henry Aabeater are among those said to be critically hurt, while John McBril and Wills Mylien are listed as badly damaged. Fireman John McBride and the superintendent’s assistant may recover. The incident at the pillet mill followed bystanders noting the frightful scene.
