George J Charlton reports the Alton wreck at Prentice near Jacksonvi occurred when a freight engine on a side track moved onto the main line. The engineer and fireman of the passenger train were killed along with four tramps riding the train. freight engine crew injured. passengers shaken but not seriously hurt.
Joconville August 22 Former secretary of state and former congressman Wm H Hinrichsen of this city was a passenger on the Chicagos Alton train wreck at Prentice Tuesday night He had recently recovered from a critical illness but the wreck relapse left him again critically ill.
Washington August 22 The Navy Department released the latest official Schley correspondence. Acting Secretary Hackett informs Admiral Schley the court’s competency should be determined by the court itself, declining department interference at this stage. The note addresses requests to call Admiral Howison over an alleged interview crediting Semovson for Santiago victory.
Washington report dated August 12 notes the revolutionary forces remain near the railroad line on the Isthmus. The government has sought to dislodge them. A guard of 50 men accompanied each passenger train the prior week, but guards were withdrawn amid objections from railroad officials who feared an attack.
