On Thursday November 12 1874 the iron merchants of New York meet in private session at the Chamber of Commerce. Their aim is to secure modification of the tariff. All interests are represented including free trade and protective.
Springfield dispatch reports a mob of union miners surrounding the Freeburg coal mine in St. Clair county. Gov Beveridge orders militia readiness and directs the sheriff to call a posse to restore order as 100 muskets and ammunition are sent to the scene.
