The President's nominations for Chief Justice face Senate disapproval. Attorney general Williams was withdrawn as unsuitable, Caleb Cushing was sent in, and many Senators oppose Cushing on political grounds, making a new selection likely.
The State Legislature debates postponing state tax collections. The public, including farmers and small business people, largely oppose delaying payments, while corporations and very wealthy individuals push for the change after years of light taxation. A European method to kill cattle with an iron mask and hollow nail is noted as reducing animal suffering.
In New York City a labor demonstration on Communist principles drew about 5,000 to Tompkins Square. Police dispersed the crowd as Sergeant Berthold was struck by a hammer. Leader Justus Schwab waved a red flag before being tackled. he reappeared later and was arrested, with the flag is said to be at the Seventeenth Precinct Station.
Prominent capitalists and officials of the St Louis Vandalia and Terre Haute Railroad arrived in the city after elections of officers for the Illinois corporation at Greenville Illinois. The annual main line election at Terre Haute named WB McKeon president W H Buckingham secretary R A Morris treasurer and other officers and directors were chosen.
At the Greenville annual stockholders meeting of the St Louis Vandalia and Terre Haute Railroad lessee T B H L R Co the following directors were elected for the ensuing year Gev B Roberts Wm P Shinn Thos A Scott Penn Wm K Edwards Otto Brodtbeck J P Alexander J S Peers A G Henry and R L Dulaney This local Vandalia organization then chose officers Geo B Roberts president Williamson Plant secretary and Wim P Shinn treasurer St Louis Democrat reported on the 14th.
