Explosion at Portage Mountain Dam Tunnel Kills Two
Two men died and three were injured in an early Wednesday explosion in a drainage tunnel at Portage Mountain dam site. The victims were John Gillis and John Durack. injured were Charles Robertson Michael Shields and Peter Sebastian. Authorities suspect coal gas ignited after a scheduled blast opened a coal pocket.

Hit and Run Driver Sideswipes RCMP Patrol Car
RCMP patrol car was damaged at about 10 15 p m Saturday when a vehicle failed to stop after sideswiping it. The offender Joseph Paul Albert Theriault of Fort McMurray Alberta rolled his car on a curve near Walei Hill and suffered a slight cut. He received a one year suspended sentence after appearing before Justice of the Peace Wm Gardiner and Magistrate H S Noakes in Dawson Creek. The driver had earlier been remanded for failing to remain at the scene after sideswiping a Hudson Hope bus Friday. The patrol car left fender was badly dented and others involved were taken to custody.

Local Couple Hurt in Car Crash on Jackfish Lake Road
Mr and Mrs Wally Gayse suffered injuries when their car left the road on a hill near Jackfish Lake. Mrs Gayse had a cut above the forehead from smashed glasses, while Mr Gayse sustained scalp lacerations and an ankle injury. A two year old in the car was uninjured. The couple had been berry picking and camping. they were hospitalized but expected to recover quickly.

Workman Falls Through Hotel Skylight in Fort St John
A 69 year old workman Gaudius Gag of Belo Fort St John on a roofing crew at a new hotel was seriously injured about 11 30 am when he fell through an arcade skylight about 12 feet to a concrete walkway. He suffered injuries to the left hip and possible fracture or dislocation of the left elbow.
