Enraged residents in East Alton Illinois plan to raise a $100 fund for families of drinkers to retaliate against saloon keepers who built a sidewalk to the East Alton Methodist church. Mayor Harry Douglas, a saloon keeper, says the gift honors the church’s local option fight. The church first considered tearing up the sidewalk, then rejected the idea as wasteful.
The mayor announces binding sidewalk construction for numerous Webster City parcels. Owners must build stone cement or brick walks by September 10, 1908 or have the city undertake the work with costs assessed against the affected lots.
