Des Moines reports the slack water canal scheme losing steam due to railroad opposition and a cautious lobby stance in Washington. Other items include education department circulars, tax collection rulings, war bond claim handling, G A R encampment badge plans, bank deposit gains, and Lincoln Hussars equipment retirement.
Governor Van Sant ordered an extraordinary session of the Minnesota legislature for February 4 to consider the tax commission's completed report and enact necessary taxation laws. Vienna operates a school for walters offering a three year course and sixteen subjects including French.
Des Moines reports the Republican caucus selected officers for the Iowa House led by Speaker W. L. Eaton of Osage. Other posts filled include Rush Benedict as chief clerk, Mollie Heist engrossing clerk, Bessie Conger bill clerk, and several assistants and doorkeepers. Senate picks include G. A. Newman secretary and Edith Leffingwell postmistress.
Judge Elwood ruled in White and Hoskins versus J J Benton that Benton owed commission to the agents. Benton sold his farm to F F Hunter and did not notify the brokers who later showed the property to B E Schernand, leading to a bona fide sale and the brokers earning their fee.
Charles Thomas in county jail to face a preliminary hearing on the Mabel Scofield murder. He plans to plead an alibi, claiming whereabouts proven up to 12 30 on October 21 1558 by neutral witnesses, though relatives may testify to earlier times.
Ft. Dodge reports James Burgess a Webster County Coal miner at Lehigh was killed when a blast discharged while he checked why it failed to explode. He died five hours later leaving a destitute widow. Other notices describe farmers swindled by promissory notes and a Davenport altercation where Gus Kuehl was stabbed seven times but expected to recover.
Charles Thomas of 1016 Woodland avenue was arrested on a murder warrant sworn by C. A. Crawford. He allegedly killed Mable Schofield on or about October 21, 1899, using chloroform and knockout drops. Bail set at 6000 dollars. preliminary hearing scheduled for February 17.
In Des Moines on January 15 the joint Republican caucus of the Twenty-ninth General Assembly nominated William B. Allison for a sixth term in the U S Senate and Jonathan P. Dolliver for re election. Allison thanked the body for the unprecedented support as Dolliver accepted the nomination. The caucus also renominated Bernard Murphy for state printer Howard Tedford for state binder and selected John R. Carter of Sioux City for editor of the code supplement.
Des Moines reports state Treasurer G S Gilberson says the apparent 656117 surplus will be used up by regular appropriations before the April start of the appropriation year. He notes current outlays drain the fund and predicts only an even balance remains, with no surplus for extra appropriations. The Pioneer Law Makers’ association will meet February 12 in Des Moines. Burlington January 11 Geo Hornung rescued the nine month old child of Mrs Larson from a burning house after a dramatic effort. He twice failed to locate the baby but finally brought it to safety amid the flames.
Des Moines reports the Iowa Senate elects officers, Harriman as president pro tem, and confirms sworn organization. The House unanimously backs W. L. Eaton as speaker and plans inauguration arrangements as joint sessions prepare for governor and lieutenant governor swearing-in.

He held about 1 200 000 rye 6 000 000 wheat and 600 000 corn and oats with margins eroding. Brokers for Armour & Company bought much of Phillips line, helping the market rally to 68 cents.
