Freeman-Tribune prints candidate notices for school treasurer and school directors. Eds. Freeman-Tribune invite Ed Freeman-Tribune readers to file as candidates for the March 9 election, naming W B Rood and John L Peterson S Parkhurst among signatories.
Local residents and visitors are noted in brief reports. Mrs. R L Prosser and her baby visited brother George Briles in Blairsburg. Mrs. Fred Geitz of Williams spent yesterday here. Miss Ella Staver of Winslow Illinois visited the Miracle home and Blairsburg friends. County Superintendent Snow and other locals travel for business. several residents plan trips to Chicago Fort Dodge Eagle Grove and Glenwood for shopping and visits.
Maximo Castillo, blamed for the Cum bre tunnel disaster that killed 51 people, was captured with six followers thirty eight miles south of Hachita New Mexico by American troops. He surrendered without a fight and will be brought to Fort Bliss for handling under U S command.
City Engineer J W Crowley promotes reinforced concrete for future Davenport pavements in business and residential districts. He cites durability and lower cost than brick, with wire mesh or metal bars as reinforcement. Crowley notes heavy traffic justifies upgrading any street regardless of location.
Iowa druggists urge action against mail order houses amid alleged illegal sales. George D. Newcomb of Creston leads investigations with state pharmacy commission. Des Moines hosts hearings on a pharmacy scandal as Attorney General Cosson may convene talks to prepare the case for court.
Anthony Petras, charged with clubbing to death his former sweetheart Theresa Hollander, again proclaimed innocence. Miss Hollander’s body was found in St Nicholas Cemetery after her parents traced footprints from their home. A coroner's jury adjourned to Thursday morning after inspecting the cemetery and a gold watch found near the body was said to belong to Miss Hollander.
New York endured heavy snow that halted street cars and cars, sending many commuters to the subway. The Interborough Rapid Transit collected 1,279,000 fares as 18,000 workers fought more than five inches of fresh snowfall. Total snow over Saturday and yesterday reached 14.9 inches. Food and coal supplies remained available with no famine expected, though recovery continued. Street cleaning chief J T Fetherstone estimated two weeks to clear streets at a cost near 600000.
The American liner St Louis reached New York yesterday three days late from Southampton after a ferocious storm. Several passengers were injured including jockey Philip Goldstein who rode for August Belmont as the ship lurched and tossed them from berths and down the companionway.
