A string of fires and accidents across Iowa left dozens of horses dead and buildings damaged or destroyed. At Burling ton a livery barn loss reached 5000 with full insurance. Dubuque saw twenty horses perish in a new stable blaze. Grundy Center suffered a major hotel fire with 12000 loss and other insured structures.
The Filipino junta issues a statement claiming a Manila steamer carried a censored American version of the battle. They accuse General Otis of treachery and describe massacres in Mulate Paco Santa Ana and Malabon. They allege civilian terror, looting by US troops, and call for appeal to Christendom.

Parfinague fell to General Overshine with two field guns. MacArthur’s division moved beyond Gagalangin with no losses. A coded march toward Caloocan continues as marines land near the city. At least one Kansas soldier killed near Caloocan during a reconnaissance, with relief efforts driving Filipinos back into the town as gunboats shelled the outskirts. In Colorado a snow slide at Silver Plume kills many Italian miners and families, with 11 bodies recovered so far.
The Illinois senate and house committees approve a bid authorizing Governor to appoint an American maize commissioner and raise 40000 dollars to display Illinois corn at the Paris exposition. Other corn states are invited to cooperate by making appropriations and appointing commissioners to extend uses of Indian corn. Washington reports indicate McKinley desires local self governance for the Philippines under an American protectorate while a Sultan’s rule in the Sulu archipelago would be accepted. meanwhile senate action on the McEnery resolution appears unlikely soon due to tense US insurgent relations. A South Dakota asylum fire kills seventeen inmates in freezing weather. The U S signs a peace treaty with Spain.
