The British steamer Nereid collided with Killochan off Dungeness, sinking quickly. Twenty four people drowned including Captain Manson. nine crew were rescued, one died later. Clear weather prevailed. Also the Spanish mail steamer Romus foundered near Billran Island, Philippines with all passengers believed drowned.
