Captain J F Merry longtime Illinois Central rail road official died at his Manchester home aged 73. He served as excursion agent and rose to general Western passenger agent then assistant general passenger agent. He helped develop the Midwest and initiated the Vicksburg battlefield national park. He married Emma J Cattron in 1866 and is survived by his wife and two children.

Radium Insertion Used in Unique Algona Operation
A young Algona married woman with long illness underwent a pioneering radiation treatment for malignant disease. Eighty thousand dollars of radium was placed in her abdomen and will remain two days. Doctors Cretzmeyer and McCreery performed the procedure, radium rented at 148 dollars daily from Chicago. The patient’s identity was not released.
