A massive fire in Chelsea, Boston, destroyed over one third of the city, leaving ten thousand homeless, with five hundred homes lost and three to five lives confirmed. Fire raged for hours in a forty five mile gale, aided by state militia, navy yard marines, and wide spread wooden structures. Insurance losses pegged at around five million, while total damages near ten million.
